President's Council on Bioethics Dismantled

While Americans were rivited by the news out of Iran last week, President Obama quietly disbanded the President’s Council on Bioethics.  The Council was formed by President Bush in 2001 in response to ethical issues regarding embryonic stem cell research.  The Council’s job was to debate the ethical implications of scientific studies and to advise the President on scientific matters and bioethics.

A Council member, Peter Augustine Lawler, states that the Council focused on honest and open debate in the Socratic method, attempting to arrive at the truth regarding the ethics behind certain scientific studies and discovery.

Lawler fears that President Obama will replace the Council with a scientific public relations group which will lack true expertise and intellectual honesty.
