Immediate Haiti Relief

As most of you are aware, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck southern Haiti on Tuesday, 12 January, near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince causing a serious loss of life and catastrophic destruction. This is the most powerful earthquake to hit the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation in the last century. Please consider the following ways to help:

1) Prayer For People And Care Providers: Remember to pray for the comfort of the Haitians and the many workers providing relief, including our service men and women.

2) Immediate Gifts For Relief: For the wisest use of your funds at this time, we direct you to reputable relief organizations who already have infrastructure in Haiti. Be careful! We have already heard stories about scams being set up around this event! Beside the Red Cross, we can recommend these:

  • Bishop TJ Johnston of the AMiA expects to be in Haiti next week (Jan 18th) to assist with aid efforts. He will be taking medical supplies and working with individuals on the ground to coordinate future relief teams. Secure online donations can be made to theAM here (https://www.theamia.org/give-online/contribute-special-projects/) or by sending a check marked Haiti Earthquake Relief on the subject line. The Johnston family has a 20 year history of ministry in Haiti, and Bishop Johnston urges theAM to pray diligently for the people of Haiti as they begin their long recovery process. "Please continue in prayer for Haiti that out of this destruction a new day would actually come upon a country and a people who have had and certainly have today – very little to hope for. My hope for Haiti (and for my own life) is in God alone. I claim this morning for Haiti, God's promise through Ezekiel to give the children of Israel a new heart and a new spirit and a hope and future that will be good (Ezekiel 11:17-20)."1
  • Shoes2Share (http://shoes2share.com/) is a local ministry that has been recommended by a trusted brother.
  • Samaritan's Purse (http://www.samaritanspurse.org), is well know to us all, PO Box 3000, Boone NC 28607, 828-262-1980.
  • You can also check on such well known organizations as World Vision (http://www.worldvision.org).
  • Though there appears to be no immediate engagement in Haiti, we can strongly recommend Anglican Frontier Missions (http://www.afm-us.org) for longer term strategic involvement in the world.

3) As additional resources and recommendations become available, we will be adding to the above list.

4) Remember that your favorite charities will be diverting funds from their regular obligations to respond to Haiti, so be sure to continue supporting them!

5) The pain and misery that we see in Haiti right now has put a face on the kind of need that is true all of the time in some part of the world. If you are moved now by what you see, don't let your interest be short-lived. Find out what's going on in the Middle East, Asia, South America, wherever, and be part of the solution all of the time! Talk to St. John's missions chairman, Ferrell Miller.
