A ten year old girl, who has been homeschooled since first grade, has been ordered by a New Hampshire court into the public school system.
The girl, who is academically and socially thriving, was ordered into a government run school in order to expose her to religious doctrines and ideas other than Christianity. The case arose when the child’s guardian ad litem, the court appointed representative regarding custody issues surrounding the parents’ divorce, told the court that in her discussions with the 10 year old, the child held to her religious convictions too rigorously.
The court therefore decided that the girl needed to be exposed to and taught other religious doctrines and points of view.
The decision is being appealed by the Alliance Defense Fund. Their lawyer states, "The court is essentially saying that the evidence shows that, socially and academically, this girl is doing great, but her religious beliefs are a bit too sincerely held and must be sifted, tested by, and mixed among other worldviews. This is a step too far for any court to take."
