Dinner Fellowship Round Robin

They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. (Acts 2:46-47)

We have been thinking that a good way for people at St. John's to get to know each other better and become more of a family would be for us to spend more time in each others' homes. We feel that having folks over to dinner has often been a way for us to break the ice and begin a real bond of fellowship. The idea is to start something that could be called the "Dinner Fellowship Round Robin" or something similar.

To begin with, we will try doing this as follows:

  • Once every 3 months (just 4 get-togethers each year).
  • Those who are interested can sign up and anyone willing to host in their home can let it be known.
  • Singles, couples and families of all ages are welcome and encouraged.
  • Group size will be limited to 8 people or so.
  • Depending on how many people sign up we will randomly pick who will be going to each host location (couples and families will be kept together of course).

For example if 40 people sign up (hopefully more!), we will have 5 host homes, each with a group of 8 or so for dinner. This will involve travel for some people, but we seem to be good at that anyway. Ideally the groups will all meet at the same predetermined time each quarter (maybe a Fri. or Sat. evening or Sunday after church). The following quarter we'll do it again but the groups will be mixed up so that it will be different every time.

Each host family will run the evening in their own natural way. The emphasis will be on eating & talking, although there can be a devotional element as well. Host families will be encouraged to try to steer conversation in an edifying direction (avoiding negative talk about the church, politics etc.). Beyond that, there isn't any set program. The emphasis will be on spending time together and getting to know each other better.

The main idea will be that, as opposed to fellowship groups, bible study groups etc., it will be a different set of folks meeting together each time. It is our prayer that this will enable us to grow closer together as a family within Christ's flock.

The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board. Please see David or Nan Hee with any questions.
